Based in Washington DC, Hernan Gigena creates contemporary drawings/collages using masking tape on paper, Jewelry (men | women) and sculptures.

Hernan Gigena was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After graduating as a graphic designer, he moved to Europe to continue his studies in 3D design, animation and multimedia. Hernan's passion for art, design and visual communication brought him to the United States where he earned a Master degree in Art and Education from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Soon after moving to Washington, DC, Hernan's innovative design approach found it's voice within the international community including the Word Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund and the Inter-American Development Bank. While his contributionas a designer (graphic/multimedia) won him international recognition, it is his masking tape drawings and jewelry pieces that caught the attention of local art lovers and collectors.

During the past six years, Hernan's energetic, colorful and whimsical work was displayed and celebrated in public and private collections such as at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Phillips Collection, The National Portrait Gallery, The World Bank Headquarters, The Renaissance Hotel, Fox NEWS, and the Washington Post. Also, his original pieces (drawings and Jewelry) can be found in private collectors' collections from coast to coast in the US.

My best thinking occurs when your mind wanders.
It opens up new worlds and possibilities.
Passion creates excitement.
it is what turns an average thing into a great thing.
  • I observe everything

I see possibilities everywhere and constantly take in information that becomes fodder for creative expression.

  • I turn life’s obstacles around

Many of the most iconic art pieces have been inspired by gut-wrenching pain and heartbreak — and the silver lining of these challenges is that they may have been the catalyst to create great art.

  • I people-watch

I am observant by nature and curious about the lives of others, I love to people-watch — and it usually generate some of my best ideas.

Cause and effect

Cause and effect is a relationship between events (art shows, life experiences and great shared moments with friends) or things (the creation of jewelry pieces, paintings and sculptures), where one is the result of the other or others. This is a combination of action and reaction.

The shows explore and unfold personal and socio-cultural issues of our time, providing a critical in-depth analysis of how the arts and culture affects our society. The events are created in partnership with local non-profit organizations and charities, to fundraise programs in the US and abroad.

Every year new shows are created. The shows present new inspiring collections (artwork-jewelry). And the storytelling of these collections are completed with live music, video projections and a select guest list of Washington DC’s “mover & shakers” and creative people (musician, singers, photographers, designer and international artists). The events take place in trendy locations; restaurants, bars, hotels and art galleries where attendants are encouraged to mingle with other art lovers, interact with the artwork and enjoy local chefs and sommeliers best selections.

My private Universe: The Enchanted Garden

The storytelling of “Enchanted Garden” centers around the positive energy brought forth by Gigena’s selection of special neon and fluorescent colors, and how the experience changes — and shapes and figures seem to magically come alive — when viewed through 3D glasses. .

The wearable art (men|women jewelry and accessories) and artwork are essentially connected or mutually inspired. They share emotions, visual structure and the spiritual dimension of pure abstraction. The one-of-a-kid jewelry and accessories are created using different materials and techniques each season. And the tape on paper collages and prints series are abstract, colorful and whimsical.

Unlike many designers and artists, Gigena’s body of work does not divide itself into subjects or devoted to specific mediums. Rather, the collections are conceived as an integrated whole that may be continuously enhanced in response to personal artistic expression.
